Since 1973, the BYU Religious Education Symposium in Honor of Sidney B. Sperry has stood as one of the premier venues for Latter-day Saint religious scholarship. Originally established to encourage faith-based study of Latter-day Saint scripture and doctrine, the symposium has become a trusted forum for both academic rigor and devotional insight.
In 2026, the Sperry Symposium will center on the Old Testament, accompanied by an anthology designed to supplement the Come, Follow Me curriculum of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The volume, titled Tender Mercies and Loving-Kindness: The Goodness of God in the Old Testament, explores how God’s goodness is revealed in His interactions with His people—embodied in His covenants and laws, expressed through prophetic revelation, exemplified in the lives of His servants, and manifested most fully in His love and redemptive work for His children in mortality. The collection seeks to inspire gospel teaching in homes and congregations by highlighting the compassion, mercy, and steadfast love of God.
Ty’s contribution to the anthology is a chapter entitled “The Covenant Promises to the Eunuch: Latter-day Saint Reflections on God’s Loving-Kindness.”
